Nitrogen Cycle

Found in Air.

Atmospheric Nitrogen (N2

Nitrogen Fixation

Decompostion

Plants       NH3 & NO3

Done by bacteria in the

grow bed.

Ammonification

N2       NH3

Basil (Ocimum basilicum), watercress (Nasturtium officinale), and cilantro (Coriandrum sativum) in the growbed take in ammonia for use in proteins and amino acids.

NH2        Proteins/animo acids

Bacteria in the grow bed change ammonia to nitrate to nitrite.

Nitrification

NH3       NO2       NO3

Bacteria in the grow bed change nitrates back to atmospheric nitrogen.

Denitrification

NO3       N2

Basil (Ocimum basilicum), watercress (Nasturtium officinale), and cilantro (Coriandrum sativum) in the growth take in nitrates to use in their own growth.

Consumption

NO3       Growth

Carbon Cycle

Occurs when Basil (Ocimum basilicum), watercress (Nasturtium officinale), and cilantro (Coriandrum sativum)dies

Decomposition

Plant        H2CO3+CO2+C12H22O11+C6H10O5+C6H12O6

Occurs inside of the plants

Glucose+Fructose=Sucrose

C6H12O2+C6H12O2=C12H22O11

Comes from the air.

CO2

Occurs in the plants in the grow bed.

CO2       C6H12O6

Occurs inside the plants

Respiration

C6H12O2        energy+ CO2

Photosynthesis

Nutrients from pool.

Placed in fish tank by humans.

Fish food

Occurs in fish

Many glucose       glycogen

Consumption

Occurs in fish.

Respiration

C6H12O2         energy+CO2

Inside the fish tank

sunburst platies (Xiphophorus maculatus)

Decomposition

C6H12O2+CO2+glycogen+O2

Energy Flow

Comes from growth lamp.

Light Energy

Lamp radiated heat.

Energy lost as heat.

O2

In the plants.

Photosynthesis

Bacteria decompose dead plants.

Plants        CO2+ H2o

+CO2H12O6+O2+starch

Fish

Bacteria do it

Decomposition

In the Sunburst Platy

Respiration

Food

Obtained from humans

In the plants.

Respiration

Gross Productivity: Basil (Ocimum basilicum)+ watercress (Nasturtium officinale)+ cilantro (Coriandrum sativum)+sunburst platies (Xiphophorus maculatus)

Net Productivity: Gross productivity- energy used in respiration
